The easiest way to check that, and one which anglers have been using for decades, is to gently push the point on your thumbnail and then try to move the hook forwards – if the point immediately grips, under minimal pressure (you don’t want to damage the point!), then it is sharp enough, but if it skates across your nail then it definitely needs changing
